Dr Bruce Waterhouse has self-published Earthwise since 1998. The journal represents his personal view of late Paleozoic and Triassic biostratigraphy, and the morphology, systematics and evolution of Late Paleozoic and Triassic brachiopods. Permian and Triassic molluscs are also described. The work is based on his long research career in New Zealand, Canada and Australia.

As of January 2024, there are a total of 23 volumes. The series is written by Bruce, with some contributions from co-workers. Most volumes deal with East Australian and New Zealand faunas. One covers the Himalaya of Northern Nepal, and others the Carboniferous and Permian of Arctic Canada. Volume 13, The bones of our mountains, is a well-illustrated geological account of the mountains and older rocks of Aoraki Mt Cook National Park.

This online version is hosted by the Geoscience Society of New Zealand. It was compiled by Donald MacFarlan from files and printed copies supplied by Bruce, and a digital set supplied by Drs Guang Shi and Sangmin Lee, University of Wollongong, with some additional scans. The intent is to establish a "home" for Earthwise that can be freely accessed on-line by researchers interested in Palaeozoic–Mesozoic invertebrate palaeontology and stratigraphy, and brachiopod studies in particular. The enthusiastic support of Guang Shi, Sangmin Lee, Hamish Campbell, and Matt Sagar made this possible.
