This new index has 1300 entries on 474 individuals and includes 260 entries labelled obituary. The index has its origins in the 1987 Index to GSNZ Newsletter 1-75 (compiled by B.W. Hayward) and the 2004 Index to GSNZ Historical Studies Group Newsletters 1-25 (Compiled by W.A. Watters), which listed biographical notes and obituaries for numerous New Zealand geologists.
The GSNZ Newsletter is the major source for entries in the index (480 entries) supplemented by entries from the former NZ Geophysical Society and Geochemical Group newsletters and the New Zealand Geomechanics News. The second largest source of entries is not surprisingly the GSNZ Journal of the Historical Studies Group (250 entries). Entires are not restricted to those that have been printed and included those found on the web, with Wikipedia providing the single largest digital source of biographies of living and dead geoscientists (130). Thirty-six entries come from the New Zealand Dictionary of Biography, accessible on-line.
Included are an extra sheet listing taped interviews with 44 geoscientists that are held in the National Library. The recordings were mostly made by Simon Nathan in the 1990s of prominent New Zealand geoscientists as part of his research for his book on Harold Wellman.
The authors acknowledge that they will not have found all the obituaries and biographical information about New Zealand geoscientists. They invite you to send information via email to Bruce Hayward about any you know of that are missing so they can be added in a future update.
