This publication presents fully revised and updated annotated English translations of Hochstetter’s manuscript German language diaries from his two-month stay in Nelson Province. During this time Hochstetter journeyed by steamer from Auckland to Nelson via New Plymouth and Wellington. In Nelson he undertook surveys and field work in the Aorere goldfields, Dun Mountain and in a number of other areas for his exemplary published geological map of the province, which also incorporated the results of a survey completed in 1860 by Julius Haast.
The diary has been annotated with many facts and contextual notes, including Hochstetter’s original diary sketches. The volume reproduces geological and topographical maps that have not been published before. Also included are several of Hochstetter’s previously unseen detailed field sheets that he annotated on his survey expeditions and which are held in Austrian National Library in Vienna. In addition, the diaries are illustrated with historic photographs relating to people, places and geology mentioned.
