New Geoethics SIG is launched

Introducing Matthew Hughes

Kia ora, my name is Matthew Hughes and I am convenor of the recently-established Geoethics Special Interest Group (SIG) within GSNZ.

I am a geoscientist based in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury Te Whare Wānanga. My research activities centre on the interplay between communities and natural and engineered systems. I conduct multidisciplinary and multi-agency research investigating how communities are impacted by and in turn influence the development of infrastructure, impacts of hazards on infrastructure and communities, and how long-term climate and landscape evolution processes will impact cultural heritage, settlements and infrastructure into the Anthropocene.

I look forward to working with the Geoethics Special Interest Group (SIG) community to formulate how we work together, and to shape a work programme. The first important opportunity to do this will be at the 2024 GSNZ Annual Conference.

If you are not yet part of the group you are able to join by using the blue 'Apply a subscription' button on your membership profile (under the Subscriptions tab).

I can be contacted on geoethics@gsnz.org.nz
