Celebrating International Women's Day
Are we there yet? The women of NZ Geoscience who paved the way to the 21st century
Until recently, any progress made in smoothing the path to allow women into geoscience careers seemed to be operating on a geological timescale. Expected to act as unpaid assistants, or give up any career aspirations upon marriage, women have contributed hugely to the development of geosciences often with little acknowledgement.
Here in Aotearoa/New Zealand, after WW2, a number of pioneering women began to fight hard to gain the opportunities, recognition and status enjoyed by their male counterparts. We are fortunate to have had such women trailblazers who have paved the way, for young women geoscientists of today, by choosing to challenge* the status quo.
You can read about them in this excerpt from the current GSNZ Newsletter.
*'Choose to Challenge' is the theme for International Women's Day, 8th March, 2021.
