Premier Geoscience-wide Awards

Geoscience Lecture Tour

For a geoscientist with excellent public speaking skills to present new research to all branches of GSNZ.

McKay Hammer

For the author(s) of the most meritorious geoscience paper(s) from the current and previous 3 calendar years.

GSNZ Honorary Life Member

Nominations are called for to recognise outstanding lifetime contributions to geoscience in New Zealand.

Hayward Geocommunication Award

Awarded to a NZ-based geoscientist or geoscientists for the most meritorious contribution to geocommunication in the current or previous 3 calendar years.

Young Researcher/Student Awards

Student and Early Career Research Award

A contribution of approximately $5000 towards research in New Zealand. Contribution can cover field, travel, analytical expenses, etc (more details on website).

Student and Early Career Travel Grant

To provide funding assistance for New Zealand early career Earth science researchers and PhD students to attend and present a talk or poster at an first international conference or workshop. 

John Beavan Geodetic Fieldwork Grant

Support for students involved with geodetic research to undertake or participate in associated fieldwork. Applications can be submitted at any time.

The New Zealand SAGE Award

The Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE), is a unique ‘hands-on' geophysical educational programme held over a two-week period in June/July in New Mexico.  Non-binding expressions of interest are called for now to assist students and their supervisors with planning ahead of final applications in February/March.

Special Awards

New Zealand Geochemistry Prize

For the most outstanding body of work or geochemistry publication published in the current or previous 3 calendar years.

Wellman Paleontology Prize

Awarded for a recent discovery of important fossil material within New Zealand.

The Tohu Kaitautoko Award

Awarded to the most outstanding Earth science technician and people in other support roles in the Geosciences in New Zealand.
