The Chatham Island SIG is a special interest group for geologists and other science enthusiasts for research, science education and science history on Rēkohu-Wharekauri-Chatham Islands. The formation of the group was driven by the late Distinguished Professor David Johnston, who worked tirelessly to foster connections between scientists and the local community in the Chathams. The Chatham Islands SIG held its inaugural meeting at the 2024 Chatham Islands Festival of Science. The group is associated with the annual Chatham Islands Festival of Science; Chatham Islands Museum and Friends of Whareweka, a support group of the Te One Science House.
