Energy SIG has a new convenor

Meet Jess Hillman

Kia Ora, my name is Jess Hillman and I am the new convenor for the Geoscience for Future Energy Special Interest Group within GSNZ.

I am a marine geologist/geophysicist based at GNS Science in Lower Hutt. My research focuses on seafloor geomorphology and underlying processes, particularly focusing on fluid flow and gas hydrates, across a range of geological settings, investigating the geological past and modern-day analogues.

Thank you to Mac Beggs for leading the Petroleum Special Interest Group, which was the predecessor from which this group has evolved. Our goal for the 'refocused' group is to encourage connections across a wide range of geoscientific topics and disciplines around the common theme of addressing Aotearoa's future energy needs. This will include everything from offshore wind, to hydrogen, to low temperature geothermal.

We had a good discussion with the group at the Geoscience Society conference in Palmerston North around what the members’ would like to see from the group. We will be sending out a quick survey to gather more feedback from those who couldn’t be there, this will help shape the group moving forward and determine where we focus our attention.

If you are not yet part of the group you are able to join by using the blue 'Apply a subscription' button on your membership profile (under the Subscriptions tab).  If you would like to receive a copy of the survey please contact Jess.
