GSNZ Branch event

Just how on Earth can we tell what Mars is made of?
GSNZ President, James Scott, will be giving his President's Lecture on Mars as part of a day of public events coinciding with the Perseverance Mars Rover landing on Friday 19th February (NZT).
Perseverance is expected to touch down on Mars at approximately 9:30am.

Mars is the 4th planet from the Sun, and there are three missions about to reach the planet.

What are these missions hoping to find?

What do we already know about Mars?

Could there be life on the planet?

Did you know that there are Martian rocks on Earth?

I will talk on these topics, as well as highlight some similarities and differences of Mars with Earth. I will also bring some Martian rocks for show and tell.

This is part of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand President’s lecture tour.
