GEOTalk: Science-Society interactions in palaeontology - Insights from Russia and their potential applications for New Zealand
Palaeontology is one of the traditional 'showrooms' of science, attracting high levels of interest from the public and significant involvement of amateur community members in real science. From 2000-2010s, there was a real 'bloom' in public interest in paleontology in Russia, resulting in a significant uptake of basic palaeontological knowledge and its inclusion into formal educational practices.
We will discuss in which forms the interaction between science and society may be realised, and will look closely at several projects (both successful and not) in which our presenter was involved - to highlight approaches which may be potentially beneficial for New Zealand science.
Come and hear an overview of science-society interactions in palaeontology, based on the presenter's experience from his native country.
