Topic Geoethics Seminar: Ethics in Hazard Warning & Response
Join us for insights from dr Sally Potter into how the social science team at GNS Science assisted the wider scientific response to events from 2010 - 2024.
Dr Sally Potter is a senior social scientist, and was part of the geohazard response at GNS Science for 14 years (2010-2024), before setting up her own consultancy company in 2024 (Canary Innovation Ltd). She will provide some insights into how the social science team assisted the wider scientific response to events such as the 2010 Canterbury and 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes, 2012 Tongariro and 2019 Whakaari eruptions, 2022-23 Taupo volcanic unrest, and 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle landslides. Roles included supporting physical scientists and field technicians in taking an ethical approach when talking to the public following an event, ensuring public communications are ethical, and following ethical practices in hazardous event-related research.
