GSNZ Otago branch talk
Tracking it down: how we found New Zealand’s tenth meteorite, presented by
Marshall Palmer, University of Otago
On 13 March 2024, Fireballs Aotearoa detected New Zealand’s tenth meteorite as it descended to Earth’s surface while lighting up the South Island sky as a bright fireball. Eight days later its trajectory was calculated, a public search was planned and after only 20 minutes into the search a fragment of the fireball was collected just south of Lake Tekapo.
Come learn about New Zealand tenth meteorite and the citizen science meteorite camera network that made its recovery possible. The meteorite and example cameras will be on display.
All are welcome to attend this talk in person and you're invited to join us and Marshall for dinner following his talk.
In addition, Marshall's talk will be streamed live at https://bit.ly/otagogeology.
