Friends of the Pleistocene Seminar Series
Ancient kauri tree rings: a world-unique resource for the Quaternary sciences presented by Drew Lorrey, Principal Scientist, NIWA
Andrew (Drew) Lorrey is a Principal Scientist based at NIWA in Auckland. One of his research foci has been to build an archive of ancient subfossil kauri tree samples to improve radiocarbon calibration and for developinging climate reconstructions during Marine Isotope Stage 3. In this talk, Drew will give an overview of research on MIS3 kauri that has been undertaken in the past few decades. Examples will be shown from recent work that have applied high-precision dating and ancient kauri 14C wigglematching to improving the timing of poorly constrained volcanic eruptions and for aligniing palaeo evidence on a common timescale. Prospects for future research on ancient kauri will also be covered.
