GSNZ Otago branch talk
An updated geological map for the Dunedin urban area, with David Barrell, GNS Science Dunedin
An updated geological map of the wider Dunedin urban area is nearing completion. The draft map is compiled largely from existing geological maps and is drawn on a lidar basemap which enables the very precise positioning of geological unit boundaries. The essence of W.N. Benson’s Dunedin volcanic stratigraphy is retained, and a new group/formation framework is introduced for the Quaternary deposits.
The new stratigraphy emphasises geology as well as geomorphology of the Quaternary units. A revised interpretation of faulting and folding is depicted on the map and illustrated on cross sections. A map text will formalise the new stratigraphic components, explain structural interpretations, summarise geological history, and describe the geological units in both lithological and geotechnical terms.
The talk will be streamed live from https://bit.ly/otagogeology but will not be recorded.
