Special Interest Group event

GEOTalks is a series of informal monthly online presentations dedicated to sharing and promoting GeoEducation and Outreach in all its forms. The talks are organised by the GeoEducation, Outreach and International Development Special Interest Group (GEOID SIG) of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand (GSNZ).

This month's talk is:

Soilsafe Kids- combining research with educational outreach

with Sophia Tsang from Soilsafe Kids

Soil surrounds us and supports our daily lives, yet most of us do not think much about it. Soil quality is degrading around the globe for a variety of reasons including development and overuse in resource production. In 2021, Soilsafe Aotearoa began researching how adults value soil in Aotearoa New Zealand. However, nearly a quarter of our population is under 15...

This year, Soilsafe Kids (the outreach branch of Soilsafe Aotearoa) launched a combined outreach and research programme to find out what children value about soil. The Soilsafe Kids programme is co-lead by Dr Sophia Tsang, Dr Emma Sharp and Dr Victoria Egli. In this talk, Sophia will provide an overview of their Three Day Programme that has been offered in schools around Tāmaki Makaurau. She will share some of SoilSafe's insights from weaving research objectives into outreach and reflect on some of the programme's strengths and challenges.

SoilSafe Aotearoa gratefully acknowledge funding from MBIE's Unlocking Curious Minds and from Te Pūnaha Matatini.
