GEOTalk: CRISiSLab Challenge
GEOTalks is a series of informal monthly online presentations dedicated to sharing and promoting GeoEducation and Outreach in all its forms. The talks are organised by the GeoEducation, Outreach and International Development Special Interest Group (GEOID SIG) of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand (GSNZ).
This month's talk is:
CRISiSLab Challenge: a different ‘seismometers in schools’ programme
with Marion Tan from CRISiSLab
The CRISiSLab Challenge is a research-education engagement initiative with college-level students in the Wellington region that encourages young scientists to experience the fields of technology and crisis management. It is an annual competition where students get hands-on with technology. In the 2021 and 2022 competitions, students worked with personal seismometers (called Raspberry Shake sensors), created innovative devices, and practised their communication skills. The experience throughout the Challenge shows students how technology allows us to observe and measure our surroundings, how science helps us understand how the world works, and how science and technology have practical applications for our everyday lives. This presentation covers the concept behind the CRISiSLab Challenge, the outcome thus far, and plans for the future.
This GEOtalk will be hosted online via Zoom.
