Peering beneath the Great Ice Barrier - Seismic and gravity surveying of Discovery Deep - Ross Ice Shelf - Summer of 2021/22
Kaikōrero (speaker): Associate Prof Andrew Gorman – University of Otago
The deepest region of the Ross Sea (> 1.5 km deep) lies beneath the roughly 450 m thick Ross Ice Shelf, well south of the open ocean and within sight of the Hillary Coast of Antarctica. The deep restricted waters here accumulate sediments that are affected by changing climates and environments in the region. Seismic and gravity data collected last summer will help to position future drilling that will bring samples of these sediments to the surface for further analysis.
