GeoTrips

Turning your fieldwork into tangible outreach (and how a user-based approach can help optimise online learning)

with Suzanne Bull, GNS Science

GeoTrips is an award-winning online catalogue of self-guided fieldtrips designed to lead the public on journeys of discovery around Aotearoa New Zealand's beautiful landscapes and geology. Since being set up in 2015 over 400 trips have been contributed by geoscientists from all around the country. In this talk, Suze will take you through a brief overview of GeoTrips and the results of a recent user-based study undertaken to understand how we can optimise GeoTrips to better communicate the value of Earth Science to all New Zealanders. The survey results, along with site metrics were used to create user personas: archetypical users whose goals and characteristics represent the needs of larger groups. These personas helped us to better understand the requirements of our target audiences so we can identify design solutions that best satisfy their needs. This will be turned into a user-guided roadmap for the next stage of GeoTrips development.
